I bet especially this would fill weeks of discussions and it will be difficult to impossible not to be unapologetic about it.

I personally would like to read Hitler’s books, because I am interested in history. I would like to find out how and what he was thinking and if, as many historians say, it was predictable what happened later. While “Mein Kampf” is sold outside Germany like any other book, it is very difficult to get hold of it in Germany. As the article says, it is prohibited to sell the book. The only possibility to find it, is in a library with a history section. But whoever tries that, for example in Darmstadt, will find out that this would be still to easy. The book is of course not just standing in a shelf beside other history books. To have a look at the book, it requires an official reservation and it is only possible to read it in a reading room with supervision. Just to make clear: it is of course not possible, to make copies or borrow the book from the library!

Another interesting example showing, if Germans are able to leave their history behind, are the number plates for cars. They are starting with a letter code for the city or region, followed by 1-2 random letters and several numbers (e.g. in Frankfurt F-AD 1623). Since several years, it is also possible to have one’s own vanity plate with for example the initials in the middle section. But people like Sonja Schmidt, Stefan Althaus, Nadine Sommer or Karl Zumwinkel are still left out from this opportunity. The reason for that? – Just look at their initials: “SS”, “SA”, “NS”, “KZ” (Konzentrationslager = concentration camp). Letter combination like that are not allowed on a German number plate, because they a related with the third Reich. People might want to have these number plates just to show their solidarity with Hitler. Consequently, one has to wonder here, if all 1.7 million inhabitants of Hamburg are Nazi friendly? All number plates of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg are starting with “HH” and this is the abbreviation for Hitler’s salution “Heil Hitler”. But banning this would be maybe too much.

What is the matter of being proud to be a German or being interested in German history? To answer this questions in relation to the article and with a bit of sarcasm: Yeah, we should be careful, it could be the beginning of a similar development and the Germans could be up to the same old thing again.

But seriously, I share the conclusion of the article that the thinking is changing, slowly, but changing. Even more, I have the hope that this development will continue. Slowly, but it is just a matter of generations, thus time.
