What My Book Ratings Mean
I’ve been using GoodReads for quite a few years now, to record what I read and connect with friends who read. As I strive to move my personal content to be primarily hosted on my own site (and maybe syndicated in other places), it is time to move my little summary of how I think about my book ratings onto here.
I first wrote this summary of “what my book ratings mean” around 2015. It has proven surprisingly accurate and hasn’t needed to change over the years.
I tend to be a forgiving reader. I can find something worthwhile in almost any writing, and I struggle to ever abandon a book without finishing it.
With that in mind, here is how I think about my star ratings for books:
Stars | Meaning |
---|---|
⭐ | I couldn’t finish reading this. |
⭐⭐ | I do not recommend this. |
⭐⭐⭐ | Fun or interesting enough, but likely forgettable. |
⭐⭐⭐⭐ | That was pretty good. Recommended. |
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Outstanding. Might read again. Highly recommended. |
